This sounds like a great idea. Would also probably make nice utility quilts.

As for the care instructions, I've washed drapes in the past with no problems, even though they said dry clean only. Maybe just wash and dry the fabric before cutting to take care of shrinkage, etc. (Most of us do that anyway.)
