I do lots of raw edge fusible applique and what I do is starch fabric heavy before cutting pieces and fusing then when I start with the buttonhole stitch or whatever, I use a lightweight butcher paper I buy by the roll at Hobby Lobby. It tears away very easily and doesn't leave a lot of stuff behind. It is also a lot less expensive then regular stablizers.
