Ok, I've never made the star before so I carefully took mine apart and tried to re-create it. I've put it into 15 steps so bear with me and if you have a question I will try to answer it. Here goes:
Start with 5 fat quarters. Choose which will be your focus (the square) and which 2 will be paired together.
