I think you can double stitch instead of a knot, but the first stitch has to be really hidden under the second.
I know my mom taught me that if you hold the "tail" and then just keep stitching over it as you go, it will hold in place. Make sense?
Are you embroidering on the top or are you wanting to embroider/quilt at the same time on all 3 pieces?
