I bought a Singer 401a at a garage sale--I had to have it serviced since knobs were "frozen" and even oiling and grease didn't get them to move. After I had it serviced, I use it more than my Bernina. Powerful, excellent stitches. Even my binding went on easier. I love all the decorative stitches, too. These machines were way ahead of their time; I highly recommend them!
