Instead of using sheets for your base, you could use tracing fabric (thin like interfacing but used for multi-sized patterns, purchased at Joann's) and use the sheets as the backing for your quilt. When I first started quilting in the early 70s, it was recommended to use sheets, especially old sheets, for the quilt backs.
