Google "quilt as you go" and you'll get a lot of responses on how to quilt in pieces. It basically involves either doing the whole thing in strips and then sewing the top strips by machine and the batting and backing with a slip stitch, or leaving the top and backing intact and cutting the batting in wavy lines and then slipstitching it together as you work your way out. Some methods use sashing...others don't. Anything bigger than a double I do by hand.
