Are you forgetting to put down your presser foot? That sounds like that's what it is.
The walking foot is used basically for straight stitching, or stitch in the ditch, and feed dogs are up, the free motion foot does meandering and things like that and is used with the feed dogs down. I hope this helps. Also try this sight
