I'm not exactly scared of black, but I just shy away from it for myself. I love the black, white and red or other color combinations--just not for me in quilts. I hesitate to wear black unless I can brighten it up around my face with color. I do think black would make the colors pop, but what about one of your favorite bright colors in the quilt with something darker for the outer border. When you have the combination you really like, then you know you have it.
