Have not made one yet, but the one I have in mind has the on-point square at the center of the braid and it looks like the braid strips just continue the sides of the square, so they are actually sewed on straight to the two 'bottom' sides of the on-point square. Hope that description makes sense!
That's how I've seen it done too, and plan to do it that way when I get up the nerve to try it. The way I saw it done, it was sewed like described above and then the sides are trimmed straight.
