It is a tad easier to just add 1 " , mark, sew and cut then square up. You will only take a little sliver off --but-- it will be square. No actual waste just more accuracy. This is how I do it, but to each her own.

I'm teaching a beginner quilting class and we are doing a free BOM off the www (but we are going to do a block a week). The first block has HSTs and this is what I plan to teach them. You don't have to fuss with that pesky 1/8" when cutting, it's a little more forgiving when you sew, and when you trim, you get a very nice square.
