I was also named Mary and went to a Catholic school. My parents who named me Mary always called me by my middle name, Renee. Why? Who knows. EVERY year at school, on the first day, I'd have to explain to the teacher that yes, my first name is Mary but I go by Renee.

Fast forward to adulthood. I married a Smith. So now my driver's license says Mary Smith. Talk about dull. When I used to have to fly to New York frequently on business, I'd always be pulled aside as being on the 'no fly' list. I always told them, if I were a terrorist I would certainly come up with something more exciting than Mary Smith. The problem was, the sign at the gate showing a person holding their ID - the name on that ID was Mary Smith.
