Put the side up that has the most appeal. sometimes I like the sharper side and sometimes the softer look, other times I can not tell.
Not with batiks but with regular fabric one of my friends uses tha back side. She is able to look at clearance Christmas and Halloween fabric, uses the back side in sashing etc. for quilts along with fabrics from shirts and other finds. Her quilts look awesome.
