I always use a leader on all of my machines, some of which have different needleplates. I do this because I use squares and I make a simple (usually)baby quilt in the process. I hardly ever cut the thread unless changing bobbins. I have had students who were unable to do this because it was an extra thing for them to stress over, but it works well for me.
