I don't use pins unless I absolutely have to, which means rarely.
I do use Sullivan's basting spray and it works great, I have some projects that I basted with spray a couple of years ago (procrastination on finishing it) and the fabric/batting/backing are still snug.
Even tho I do like Sullivan's it does need to be used in a well ventilated area. I bought quite a few cans when our local Hancocks went out of business cuz it was the only store that carried it. When I run out I will try some of the other basting sprays that people recommend, if I can find them.
