In response to your question, I personally would not recommend it because that type of binding tends to be weaker than some of the other types, as well as giving more of a less tailored look to the quilt. I kind of found that out the hard way. And, if you are concerned about binding, go to the local fabric store (JoAnn's, Hancocks, etc.) and get a tape maker. They are great for making a quick, strong, binding for around the edges of the quilt. For a beginner, I would suggest getting a 1" tape maker. It is easier to place the made binding/tape on the edges. Once again, welcome, and happy quilting!!
