I would think that just about any pattern that wasn't
"girlie" would work. I'm not crazy about D9Ps and I truly dislike Turning Twenty but a Bow Tie, 9 Patch, Rail Fence, would work nicely. The main question for me would be does he want Scrappy? Modern? Traditional? Weed Wacker is a good scrappy pattern.
