There are no quilt police! Just do what feels & looks right to you!!! :D
I do the same, except my hands will not allow me to do much handwork anymore so I always sew the binding to the back and bring it to the front and use a decorative stitch to sew it down. If it is'nt perfect on the back no one will see it.
