I used some small cording, and that's cute, but was a pain in the you-know-what trying to get it in the right place so it could be sewn into the seams between the balloon and the basket. So I've ended up just using a satin stitch for the ropes.
Yeah, I'm just using a stitch on my machine that is actually a stretch stitch, three lines of stitching together, to make my ropes. I thought about the cording, too, but it seemed like it would be a lot of trouble, so I didn't even try.
