My older son made a strippy wallhanging for his 2nd grade teacher, then he made a 12" block quilt with sashing. His last project, when he was in middle school was designing and sewing a twin size block based on the flag of Colonial America. We're big fans of Colonial Williamsburg. For him, it was about design and color, and the sewing was just how it had to come together. Eventually he gave up quilting, because sports became more important, but quilt design and construction was a great experience.
