It depends on what you mean by "RULES". I believe the following SHOULD NOT be broken:
1. Accurate marking and measuring
2. Accurate cutting
3. Accurate seams
4. Pressing for flat seams and blocks
These take much of the frustration out of quiltmaking.
Gee's Bend quilts pretty much break all of these rules.
