When I was sewing this way 20 yrs ago I cut out 3/4" squares and hand sewed them together. 1/8" works very well and I have always ironed my seams open so they are not bulky. Holding the 3/4" square is no harder than holding a dime in your fingers. I really liked that there are only 3 stitches to sew two squares together. It goes really fast since it is so small. I have always tacked my squares on each end so they couldn't move while I was sewing them.
