I had forgotten about this thread. That Old World pattern is a Greek Island view.
I actually tried that technique with the black background with the polar bear. She's on a black background. But, I found I couldn't get all the intricate parts sized and properly spaced and gave up and used the tape and stitching.
For simplier patterns, that's the way to go. For intricate, comlex patterns, it's near impossible to get it right.
