i've given this a lot of thought and here is what i came up with:

why can't a question be asked on an open-to-all post? when someone asks a quilting question and gets the usual 400 answers, we all learn something. by asking very specific questions of only one person, we all miss interesting and often important information. sometimes that question and answer is better shared. who will know what to share and what seems unimportant? if nothing seems important, well, then, ........... on the other hand if everything seems worthy of being shared, than it should have been asked openly in the first place.
i don't think it's necessary to be adopted to get advice. no one here knows everything. every question should be thrown out for answers reflecting different viewpoints.

(for example: pre-washing fabric  . only one opinion? puh-leeeze!)
