there used to be little 'guards' that could be attached to the shank right above the foot. it screwed on and kept little fingers far enough away from the needle to not get sewn together but close enough to really sew. if he's interested now, then he's the right age. see if you can find those little buggers. maybe your LQS can get them for you, or a catalog, either on - or off-line.
