I starched the square before cutting. Never hold the end of a bias cut edge as it feeds into the machine or pull it from behind. Don't pull it away from the needle by the fabric after sewing. That will distort most all sewn pieces bias or not. I made several HST using this method last night. I didn't have a problem but I made sure the pieces were not tugged on at all.
