I "ALWAYS" prewash with Retayne. If a large amount, I do it in the washer. If one or two pieces, I use the bathroom sink. Retayne sets the colors. I would also throw in a Color Catcher if I am washing a whole quilt.....I figure I can't be too sure.
Once I started using batiks, I was hooked. The extra steps needed to set the colors is so accepted in order to use this beautiful fabric. It seldom frays, has body without stiffness and is generally WONDERFUL! Retayne is not cheap, but you only use a small amount with each wash. I got mine at the LQS.
