Several years ago I made a blocking board for pinning down my crocheted doilies; same principal could be used to make a pressing board. I used a cork bulletin board. For your pressing board you could use a piece of wool laid down on the cork, then cover it with 1" checked fabric, making sure you don't stretch it wonky. Then when you press you use the squares like a ruler You can even pin into the cork if need be. That's how I held down my doilies when starching & blocking them. Just staple the fabric to the frame of the bulletin board.
