The 1/4" foot on my sewing machine always helps me get the best binding, using 2" cross-grain double-fold strips. And I stop just one stitch shy of 1/4" from the end and backstitch. Then I pull out the quilt from the machine, clip threads, fold my mitered corner, and begin stitching again.
