It's REALLY hard to 'hear' exactly what someone else wants. If you're going to make a quilt for someone, it's probably best to have them buy the fabric and pick out the exact pattern, so there won't be any misunderstandings. AND agree on exactly what you're going to charge - per hour, per inch, per whatever -before any buying by either of you happens.
I agree with JoanneS....Made a centerpiece once for a friend. All she wanted was something red, black and white for her kitchen.
Didn't care about the shape or pattern (just had overall diameter limits)
I made it for her at no charge. It think it looked nice.....nope! wrong shade of red - - too bright!
She took it and went home unhappy. Oh well, some people are hard to please.
