I don't really precut the shapes. When I PP, I use a piece of fabric held up behind the pattern with my Ott lite behind so that I can see if there is enough for a 1/4" seam all the way around.
Once I have the piece sewn on, I just fold the paper back to within 1/4" from the sew line, trim, fold paper back and put on the next piece.
