hmmmm...I recently made this quilt and did not have this problem. I'm having problems picturing exactly what you are describing. I do know I starched heavily because you don't want to stretch those sides that are bias. And pin a lot before sewing.
After looking at your photo I'm not sure I see the problem. Once you get the fabrics sewn on either side of this strip it should look pretty good.
