I used a size 14 needle when I did it. To compensate for the extra fabric layers and fusible web. The one tip that I use a lot is to use your needle up/down feature and set it so it's down. That way you can pivot at corners and around tight curves. Also I'll adjust my stitch length at the end of a line of stitching sometimes so that the last stitch is right at the end of the fabric.
