I machine applique, but I sew my design on another piece of fabric right sides together, then I put a slit in the back and turn them right side out, so I don't have raw edges, then I just use a fabric glue stick or pines to hold it in place. I have tried sevreal methods, and this one take a few more steps and a little more time, but I like the finished producted, and then I can use what ever stitch that suits my fancy. :D I hope this helps.
