You wouldn't like ironing those beautiful fabrics with a sad iron while standing by a hot stove. (needed to keep those irons hot). This had to be done even when the temperature was above 90 degrees. There was no air conditioning,either. We usually baked bread and did the ironing on the same day, as a hot stove was needed for both.
