It is a beautiful, cuddly quilt. Sorry this happened. I agree there is no magic fix. You will be glad you opened that part up so you can tuck it back in. If you don't, it will most likely keep fraying on each side of the mis-hap.
One of those things people who don't quilt never get to know or understand.
