you make the knot in the end of the thread, stick your needle into one layer of fabric and kind of weave it along an inch into the batting, bring the needle out where you are going to start stitching. pull the thread through giving it just enough tug to pop it into the fabric, it buries into the batting, take a small back stitch at the beginning of stitching.
