I think if you backed it and quilted it onto a sheet it would hold up fine. I wouldn't leave it just pieced with no backing though. That would only hold up until it's washed. Unless you did some fancy stitching over each seam sort of like a crazy quilt, then it might hold up longer without being quilted onto a backing but you'd still get lots of loose threads on your duvet.
