I seem to remember from my Boy Scout days that the real flag was never supposed to be used for a "common" use, such as a garment or a blanket. These items will be handled disrespectfully (wadded up in the laundry, spread out on the ground, etc). That's why you see stars and stripes on clothing and such that are representative of the flag without actually being a flag. I recommend you keep the image as is. Thanks for sharing - this is a great patriotic quilt.
