I just started to hand piece a quilt using the Celtic Illusions pattern by Karen Combs. I needed a project to take with me when we went RVing on vacation and I certianly didn't want to bring my machine! It is going beautifully - I find it much easier to match some of the seams with odd angles using hand piecing rather than a machine. It also isn't taking a lot of time - the quilt is 100 blocks and each block has 2-5 different colors but I am about 3/4 of the way done and I started it the second week in August (including the cutting)! I work full time, and I find it very relaxing at night during the week when I only have a couple of hours of downtime. I am planning to machine quilt the piece on the weekends when I have a few hours to devote to sewing. BTW - I am only 50 so you don't need to be an older sewer to hand piece!
