Well the books I have show you sewing on the unprinted side of the paper(this is why they suggest using tracing paper) with the fabric on the right or printed side. When the next piece is sewn on it is right side down on the previous number then I finger press then press with the iron. Then before the next piece I fold the paper at the line and trim the 1/4 in. where I will sew the next number.
Makes more sense to me and if the result is the same the no harm no foul.
Also the friend that helped me said that since I am just learning to use a 1/2 in seam allowance until I was comfortable with making sure the pieces were big enough to cover the number correctly.
