What are the odds of that happening twice? My mom used to have the older iron too with the black and white cloth cord. The copper wiring started coming through the cloth. She got rid of it. My grandma still heated her iron on her wood burning stove as late as the mid 70's. They don't make them like that anymore (women :) I am really concerned about your problems.
