The first thing I got myself was a needle plate for my sewing machine. There is only a small hole for the needle - dont ever go on zig zag stitch with that one!?
Next to that the common copy paper worked best for me and I cutted the pieces generous and trimmed after each seam. As I said earlier I liked the patterns best that started with 1" squares and there is no way to work with pinning or basting. I had to go with a stencil and most of the seams had to be redone for 8 to 10 times till it fitted.
