You put the top and backing facing each other, then the batting on top of that. Sew around it leaving an opening so you can pull it all right side out.
It works great on quilts too! I did it for the 2 lap quilts I made for wedding gifts. You don't have to put a binding on it after you do that. All I do after I pull it all right side out is smooth it all down evenly, then sew around the outside of it. When I sew it together all sandwiched, I use a 3/8th inch seam, then when it's all right side out, I sew a 1/4 inch around the entire thing.
i did that on my first quilt, but no batting as i used fleece. then around edges i did a fancy stitch.... :P I sure like your table runner. Not sure where it"wonky", cuz it looks pretty darn good to me kiddo. great job!
