I was just watching a YouTube video about treadle machines and the woman mentioned that quite a few of the red eyes are missing that plate because people can't figure out how to get them back in after they take them out. She said that they slide into the space from
right to
left (coming in from under the needle) rather than from left to right the way it looks like it should go in.
