Sometimes called 'depression lace' and also 'Australian lace'. It is a pattern of light and dark cross stitches and lace weaving on check fabric (usually gingham). In Primary(Grade) school in Australia, most children learn a simple version of this during craft lessons. It is one of my favourites as I can take it on the train if I go to the city - a 4 hour journey each way.
