Batiks are more closely woven than regular quilting fabric, so that is why you get that sound. The needle is supposed to match the thread, rather than the fabric. So use a size that allows your thread to flow smoothly or you will end up breaking your thread a lot. If you do get thread breakage, then first change the needle to the same size. You may have gotten one with a burr in the eye, or it is old and worn. If you still get thread breakage, then you need a larger needle.
