Hi Patti: There may be others with more knowledge about this issue, but it is my impression that these were for milder times, when such a warm covering wasn't required. I think quilters back then still liked to have pretty decorative things in their homes. Perhaps someone else will weigh in on this topic. I continue to learn more about quilts all the time!
