Two spools are used for this machine. Instead of a bobbin, one full spool of thread is used in a can (acts as the bobbin) for the bottom thread.

What I would like to know is why the bobbin became more popular over this method. In my opinion just putting a spool of thread in a can is a lot easier than fussing with a bobbin. Maybe the sewing machine industry will one day come up with a new machine that uses this technology again (time for technology to change once more and maybe it can be made in America once again).
I did notice it had a bobbin winder on the machine also. I wonder if it was an option for the two spool.....
