Just remembered that granddaughter, Eris, last year made mug mats for Dad and Mom. We cut (with pinking shears) square of muslin and printed square of fabric, both about 4 inches. She colored picture with crayons of family pet (flower or anything ok) She signed art, of course. (I pressed it with paper towel on top to set & added a few outline strokes with black permanent marker). Then we cut square of batting about 1/4" smaller. The backing, batting and top were pinned together. She used big needle with embroidery thread to sew about 1/2 inch from edge. Stitches pretty large but it stayed together.
